John Lennon assasination
I was 4 and remember hearing it and laughing as I thought they said lemon. My mum quickly corrected me.

I do remember seeing the 80 cup final on tv before that, as I remember my mum pointing out that was where my dad was.
Remember the parade next day also

My parents had no idea that I could read until I read the headline on my Dad's paper (upside down too)about the John Profumo /Christine Keeler case.
I faintly remember JFK getting shot as I was disappointed that the Danny Kaye show was cancelled (not nearly as disappointed as Jackie Kennedy,no doubt)

The sinking of the "Flying Enterprise" off Cornwall in January 1952 - despite heroic efforts by Admiralty tug "Turmoil" and her crew to effect salvage.

Very early days ( relatively ) of TV news being able to cover such a story - helped by the fact it was right on our doorstep.

Probably sticks in my mind as my - Finnish - grandfather was a former Merchant marine sailor (shipwright) and always took a keen interest in any related news

Re: What was the first major news story you remember as a child?
When you say 'us', you really mean 'me' dont you, seeing as no one else is casting doubt over anyone else's replies. I was 7 in 67, we had a tv dont really see what there is to doubt but you carry on you hapless clown.

Can remember Cup Final Grandstand in 1975 if that counts?! Otherwise I can't remember seeing anything news wise until Elvis dying in 77. I was 9.

Careful!

You're clearly his latest love interest in his desperate search for a best mate; you'll either be killed in a car park in front of your friends (Father, forgive him, for he knows not what they are) in some pathetic, 2 bob alpha-male ritual or get an invite to the next bench techno-techno (bring your own donkey) bangin' get on down with Jakob and da krew VW GTi Vaccine-friendly European "tour" tribute event (free swan & carp - no beaver).

Elvis dying and crowds gathering outside graceland, nothing after that until either Lennon being shot or the sas raid on the Iranian embassy. Which ever came first.

The Cuban missile crisis when I was 5, I had older sisters so my Mum and Dad got a letter telling them to attend a meeting at our local primary school where they were told in the event of a nuclear attack to get a few tins of food in, paste newspaper over the windows, hide under the table and avoid going out for a day or two!

Can’t remember the year but there was a front page in the Daily Mirror showing twins that had suffocated in a refrigerator left in the back yard.

They died holding hands, Harrowing to see the photo

Apollo 11 like a few
Can remember we got sent home from school to watch on tv.
Dont think it was on live but was when the film had arrived and that school only had 1 tv.

Was doing a summer office job during University holidays when John Lennon died. Someone came back from lunch with the afternoon paper and a few of us were crowding round reading it.
Boss came back & asked what was happening.
When he was told that Lennon was dead he shrugged and said 'Big deal, plenty of people die every day'
Still makes me laugh

Re: What was the first major news story you remember as a child?
My earliest memory of a news bulletin was the death of King George VI. I was 4 years 5 months old. I remember hearing it on the "wireless" while looking out the window on a cold day with snow flurries in the air.

But don't ask me what was in the news yesterday! Actually, I do know but you get my drift.
